New Year’s Day 2012

Welcome to Worship!

Whether you are a first-time visitor, a regular participant,
or a returning friend, we are glad you have been able to join us today
and trust that you might sense something of the

peace and presence of God amongst us

‘Within these walls let no-one remain a stranger’

Notices

  • On this first Sunday of 2012, we wish you and all of yours a happy and blessed New Year!
  • This morning the Sacrament of Holy Communion (Shorter Order) will be celebrated at both ends of the parish, and regardless of age, stage and denominational background, we invite all who acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord to participate with us in this memorial.

Thought for the Day (New Year)

I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year

'Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.'

And he replied, 'Go into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God – that shall be to you better than light
and safer than a known way!'  Minnie Louise Haskins

CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsive)

Min:      In the beginning before time, before people,
                before the world began

Min:      Here and now among us, beside us, enlisting the
people of earth for the purposes of heaven
,

ALL:        GOD IS

Min:        In the future, when we have turned to dust and all
we know has found its fulfillment,

ALL:        GOD WILL BE

Min:      Not denying the world, but delighting in it, not condemning the world, but redeeming it, through Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit,

ALL:        GOD WAS,

GOD IS,

GOD WILL BE.

OFFERING

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Numbers 6:22-27

Aaron's Blessing

2The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 23 “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them,  2The LORD bless you and keep you; 25the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; 2the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.  27 “So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”

EPISTLE: Galatians 4:4-7

4When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. 6And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.

Hymn 744            Jesus, name above all names

GOSPEL LESSON: St Luke 2:25-35 (KJV)

25And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.  26And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.  27And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,  t28hen took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

f30or mine eyes have seen thy salvation, w3hich thou hast prepared before the face of all people; a 3light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.  33And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.  34And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;  35(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
